Florida Care ALF of Amelia Island, Inc., doing business as Amelia Springs Assisted Living, has agreed to pay $20,000 and furnish other relief to settle a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit filed by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency announced. According to the EEOC’s lawsuit, as soon as Amelia Springs Assisted Living management learned that one of their temporary staffers was pregnant, they refused to give her more shifts and fired her. Terminating an employee because of pregnancy violates the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The EEOC filed suit in US District Court for the Middle District of Florida after first attempting to reach a voluntary pre-litigation settlement through its conciliation process.
